FlexMT™ from ABB increases machine tool utilisation by as much as 60%

11 August 2014

The FlexMT is a standardised yet flexible solution which increases machine tool utilisation by as much as 60% while reducing labour costs.

A leader in the development of turnkey automation solutions, ABB is pleased to introduce its latest innovation, the FlexMT. This standardised, yet flexible robot solution sets a new standard in machine tool automation by increasing machine utilisation by as much as 60%. Available in two variants, the FlexMT 20 (20kg/1.65m reach) and the FlexMT 60 (60kg/2.05m reach), the FlexMT comes complete with a robot controller inside its fully integrated control cabinet. The FlexMT is a pre-engineered, well-tested and reliable automation solution.

“ABB puts a lot of effort into creating solutions which are truly innovative and address the real needs of our customers,” says Frank-Peter Kirgis, Global Business Line Manager for ABB. “With the FlexMT we’ve hit many of our customers leading concerns. The solution is easy, fast and flexible to set up and program; all things our customers demand. The FlexMT can also give small and medium size companies a higher degree of automation.”

Capable of handling both small batch and volume production, the FlexMT comes equipped with a choice between a two- or three-finger gripper and six standard plug n’ play options, including: two separate deburring tools, a re-grip table, needle marking unit, turn station, air cleaning box and a infeed/outfeed conveyor.

“The FlexMT guarantees constant and predictable output from the machine tool,” explains Kirgis. “It facilitates higher machine tool utilization, up to a phenomenal 90% compared with traditional machine tools which are closer to 50%, and a much faster ROI for our customers, giving them a competitive advantage.”

With the aid of a vision-guided robotics, FlexMT loads and unloads traditional machine tools including horizontal and vertical lathes and machining centers as well as 5-axis machines and grinders.

All ABB Robotics' products are fully supported by the ABB Robotics’ global sales and service organization in 53 countries and over 100 locations.
