This year the Appetite for Engineering programme will focus on challenges facing engineers working in the food processing sector and will look at how technology and automation can help overcome these challenges. The event takes place at the Manufacturing Technology Centre, in Coventry, on 19th March.

The event programme is as follows:

8.15am: Coffee and networking

9.00am: Chairpersons welcome: Our chairman for the day, Chris Buxton from CB Consulting, will set the scene for the day.

9.20am: Nigel Hillyer – Feed Milling Engineer & Operations Consultant: Nigel will talk about the agritech experience of automation/digital technology adoption and the huge benefits it has brought to this sector arguing that the food manufacturing sector should be looking to follow the same example.

9.45am: Dr Yianni Alissandratos, Proposition Lead at Britvic: Yianni will be discussing Britvic's environmental sustainability strategy and how this has led him to spearhead partnerships and innovative approaches aimed at valorizing liquid waste – extracting and transforming it into valuable compounds. Through this journey, Britvic is not just advocating for a healthier planet but also demonstrating how responsible stewardship can go hand in hand with business operations.

10.10am: Steve West, Director of The Pudding Compartment: Steve will highlight how taking the first steps into digitalisation needn’t cost the earth – explaining the benefits experienced at The Pudding Compartment since the adoption of smart sensor technology. 

10.35am: Coffee break and networking

11.05am: Bertrand Emond – Membership Ambassador & Culture Excellence Lead Campden BRI Group: Bertrand will discuss the importance of having a strong and positive safety and quality culture to drive positive behaviours in, across, and throughout a business.

11.30am: Technology panel discussion: Chairman Chris Buxton 
Our expert panel will discuss how technology adoption can help food and beverage manufacturers keep up with the pace of change. What challenges does technology adoption bring and how might these challenges be addressed? Panellists include Tanya Barringer, Senior Industry Growth Policy Executive at the Food and Drink Federation; Bhavnita Patel, Sector Development Manager at the Manufacturing Technology Centre; Richard Morris, Production Director at The Bury Black Pudding Company; Martin Miller, Head of Engineering at Greggs; and Dr Yianni Alissandratos, R&D Product Innovation Manager at Britvic.

12.50pm Lunch and networking

2.00pm: Skills session starts: The skills session Chairman, Cian Short, Early Careers Manager at Kepak Group sets the scene and outlines his experience to date.

2.10pm: Sarah Green, Senior Lecturer Food Operations & Programme Lead Engineering Apprenticeships at University of Lincoln: Sarah will outline the role that apprentices play in supporting and moving food businesses forward.

2.25pm: Two engineers and two apprentices from Kepak and Bakkavor will discuss their food industry journeys.

2.45pm Q & A session: An opportunity for the audience to join in the conversation with their views, questions and thoughts relating to engineering skills and apprenticeships.

3.40pm: Cathy Hough, Group Early Careers Manager at Bakkavor: Alongside a spokesperson from Birmingham Metropolitan College, Cathy will discuss the importance of utilising partnerships, through business networks and providers, to support successful apprenticeship programmes. 

3.55pm: Skills session summary: Cian will summarise the main learnings from the skills session.

4.00pm: Chris Buxton, Appetite for Engineering Conference chairman will conclude the event
