Futureproofed stretch wrapping solution for sausage manufacturer

25 January 2024

When London-based sausage manufacturer, Delenco Foods, realised that one of its stretch wrapping machines was experiencing excessive amounts of downtime, it made the decision to invest in a new machine.

The addition of a new individual quick-freezing line had doubled manufacturing capacity for Delenco Foods, so ensuring that all products could be quickly packaged was vital to ensure the smooth running of the production line.

So, when the company began experiencing issues with an old stretch wrapping machine, it needed to find solution quickly. Richard Barber, Director at Delenco Foods, takes up the story: “We currently use three stretch wrapping machines to package our products to ensure they retain their freshness and quality for as long as possible.

Increased downtimes
“We identified that one of our older units was experiencing increased amounts of downtime. Instead of wasting production time attempting to manage a failing situation, we made the decision to purchase a replacement.”

The Delenco team contacted ULMA Packaging UK to purchase a third stretch wrapper, to match those already used on its two other lines. The ability of the stretch wrapper to automatically change the size of the wrapping depending on the product, and its compatibility with multiple films futureproofs the company from any changes it may want to make in the future.

“Because ULMA had supplied our previous machines, we already had a good relationship the company. We travelled to its UK headquarters, where it was able to demonstrate the different machines that were compatible with our films. This visit helped us make an informed decision about the best solution to meet our needs,” continued Richard. “We already knew that our packaging was compatible with the machines and we knew how to operate them. It took three months from us deciding to purchase a new stretch wrapper to it being delivered and installed. On arrival it was integrated into production with minimal disruption.”

With the new stretch wrapping machine now fully operational, Dele https://www.itoh-denki.com/nco is benefiting from reduced downtime and the increased productivity this offers. Capable of wrapping 35 trays a minute, the machines have an optimal output of 1,575 packs of sausages a day. “The machines ensure that all our products are perfectly packed, ready for transportation to our customers. Our packaging line is now entirely ULMA machinery, and if the business were to expand, I would not hesitate to purchase a fourth machine,” concluded Richard.
