Reverse osmosis technology halves water treatment energy consumption

23 May 2023

Te-Tech Process Solutions is manufacturing the SAM50 reverse osmosis (RO) system which features an energy recovery pressure exchanger that is said to be able to reduce energy consumption by over 50% compared to competing technologies.

RO has been the water treatment process of choice for the food and beverage industry for many years. Whether for process water or utilities water, RO is able to deliver high quality water. And with no hazardous chemicals during operation, RO satisfies all the requirements of HACCP. However, conventional RO is traditionally energy intensive and, increasingly, expensive to operate.

The SAM50 technology was developed by University of Birmingham spin out Salinity Solutions. It offers a small footprint, with modular units using standard 8in RO membrane cartridges and includes ‘plug and play’ installation.

The system’s high recovery operation can mean a reduction of up to 80% in wastewater by comparison with conventional reverse osmosis plant.
