Keeping product flow steady

27 March 2023

A mobile screw elevator has been developed to meet the needs of the craft brewing industry, helping ensure a consistent end product.

Many independent brewers and distillers have been founded in recent years across the UK – one of which is 8 Sail Brewery, a craft brewer which drew inspiration for its name from an eight-sailed windmill that is adjacent to the brewery.

The brewery has been collaborating with Guttridge, a process and products handling company that is part of the MHA Group, allowing it to carry out research and development work on its Easyflo mobile screw elevator, to assess improvements to make it suitable for use in the micro-brewery industry.

The Easyflo mobile screw elevator features an integral loading hopper. The hopper base is fitted with a rotating paddle designed to loosen the hopper contents, keeping them moving and encouraging their entry into the screw elevator section. The screw then elevates the material for discharge into packaging or processing machinery. This assisted feed action makes the solution suitable for handling materials with poor flow characteristics or those which compact or bridge easily.

Easy cleaning and ease of maintenance were the key design objectives for the Easyflo to make it suitable for use in the brewery industry. Controls have been kept simple – including a touch screen interface and speed control. There is also an optional external socket for an automated start/stop signal.

Whilst the Easyflow design has changed little since its first conception in the late 1980s, Guttridge has continued to refine its product through testing and customer feedback, such as has been happening at 8 Sail Brewery – companies who are keen to reduce manual handling of their ingredients and products.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity given to us by 8 Sail Brewery. It provided us with an opportunity to prove the suitability of Easyflo in the craft brewery sector and to find ways to make it suit this type of application,” said a spokesperson for Guttridge Conveyors.

Supplying a steady and continuous flow of grain into the mash tun allows operators in craft breweries to focus their attention on the addition of water, ensuring the ratio is correct and ultimately, providing a more consistent product.
