Reduced maintenance > Continuous throughput > Rapid financial payback

13 March 2023

Typically, pay-back on equipment investments is measured in terms of years, or perhaps months. However, for one fresh pre-prepared salad producer, the payback for an investment in a Lafert ‘Marlin’ stainless-steel motor was less than a month!

This success came directly from the avoidance of motor failure and the consequent uninterrupted production that achieved significant financial savings. The Marlin motor is proving to be a long-term, efficient solution.

As well as being financially justified, the design characteristics of the stainless-steel motor are compatible with the company’s hygiene commitment. This is in line with the HACCP-based ‘Good Practice Guide’ (the first recognised industry guide), for which the company was a co-author.

The producer of pre-prepared salads installed a 2.2kW ‘Marlin’ stainless-steel motor from Lafert to replace a motor employed to drive salad leaf cutting blades on a specially engineered robot – an application subject to the constant presence of water and frequent hose wash downs.

The Lafert Marlin motor has proved so reliable that the company installed a second Marlin motor on another machine, whilst exploring the feasibility of employing stainless-steel motor/gearbox packages to perform various duties on other machines and robots.

In addition to their corrosion resistance (IP69K/IP66) and hose-down in-place qualities, Marlin motors have smooth bodies with no cooling fins or other potential catchment areas for possible product contaminants. As well there having no fins, the terminal box is round, and the motor details are etched into the body so there is no nameplate to trap material or fall off.
