Robot-enabled desert decoration system

13 June 2022

There has been a noticable increase in interest in the use of robotics for food and beverage production and packaging applications, primarily to reduce reliance on manual production processes and increase productivity.

BeeHex is a manufacturer of bakery decoration machines with integrated robotics. Its machines decorate deserts, biscuits, pastries and cup cakes in large batches and with complex 3D designs as well as personalisation. Production lines include multihead three-axis XYZ gantry robots, controlled by a motion-centric controller from Trio. The system scans trays of product and the gantry robot applies precision designs with 12 nozzles that can decorate 12 cakes per minute, or as many as 10,000 cookies per hour.

The benefit for BeeHex’s customers of its robot-enabled decoration system is an increase in product quality, and improved hygiene standards

As a result of requirements from bakeries to increase productivity, BeeHex is now starting to integrate Trio’s new SCARA robots into its machine designs. The SCARA robots are controlled by Trio’s Flex-6 Nano controller that can control two SCARA robots simultaneously. The SCARAs will be tasked with covering the decoration process from infeed to decoration to packaging.
