Don’t get in a jam - choose the right pump

25 April 2022

Jam can be a difficult fluid to pump due to a few factors – firstly, it is quite viscous so needs a particular type of pump to transfer it and secondly, jam often contains solids in suspension, such as fruit chunks or seeds, which can cause certain types of pumps to clog.

Solids can also cause the mechanical seals fitted to the pump, to leak.

Due to the high sugar content and sticky nature of jam, seal faces in mechanically sealed pumps, can also stick together when the pump is in standstill and can rip apart and leak when the pump is put back into operation.

Kecol specialises in offering pumping solutions that can help overcome these challenges. It’s piston pump, for example, is suggested as a good choice to pump jam because of its ability to handle viscous products with solids in suspension. It also provides relatively high discharge pressures and features hygienic clamp construction for easy cleaning, in addition to its simple pneumatic operation.

The perfect pump will always depend on the application, so it is advisable to speak to a pump specialist to ensure that the pump chosen is able to handle the requirements of the application.
