In praise of the X-ray

19 November 2021

Mark James, sales manager at Yamato Scale Dataweigh reinforces the value that an X-ray system can bring to food processing applications.

Numerous contaminants can affect out on a food production line so manufacturers need to adopt a rigorous approach to safeguard their products.

X-ray is able to detect a wide range of contaminants, including bone, salt, glass and metal, all of which can compromise the safety and quality of food products. He said: “X-ray traditionally had a questionable reputation, thanks to misleading information about its radiation impact on food products. With those myths dispelled, manufacturers are now turning their attention to the benefits of this inspection solution which is able to achieve a greater level of inspection that other equipment cannot – even complex challenges such as identifying glass contamination within glass packaging or seeing products within rigid containers. By utilising X-ray food processors and other manufacturers can safely review the quality of their products and reduce the risk of their output harming a customer.”

Most X-ray systems use a standard diode size to fit all contaminants within product. To ensure the best detection levels in every application, Yamato changes the diode size of the x-ray diode dependent on product specifics and speeds. This means that X-ray is compatible with the majority of product types and the various challenges a food processer may be looking to address. As the complexities of products and ranges change over time, the X-ray system can also adapt.

X-ray ensures compliance with major standards in the food industry, including HACCP, ISO 22000, British Retail Consortium and codes of practice.
