More demanding motor energy efficient requirements

19 October 2020

New, even more demanding energy efficiency requirements for motors and variable speed drives will come into force from 1st July 2021, followed by a second phase on 1st July 2023. These new demands are set out in the Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781.

The new tighter, energy-efficiency standards both extend the Regulation’s scope to include new motor ranges and ends the acceptability of IE2 minimum efficiency motors with a variable speed drive (VSD) option.

For all EU countries, July 2021 sees the following new MEPS standards come into force.
These are:

• IE3 minimum efficiency for motors from 0.75 to 1000kW
• IE2 minimum efficiency for motors from 0.12 to 0.55kW

The Regulation’s scope covers 3-phase, single speed motors: 50Hz, 60Hz, 50/60Hz, 2, 4, 6 and 8 poles, rated on continuous duty operation (S1, S3>80%, S6>80%); brake motors (TEFC & TEAO) and Ex motors (Ex eb are exempted).

The second phase of the new MEPS comes into play from 1st July 2023 and is extended to include Ex eb and single-phase motors. It calls for the following:

• IE4 minimum efficiency for motors from 75 to 200kW – 2, 4 & 6 poles
• IE2 minimum efficiency for motors from 0.12 to 1000kW – Ex eb and single-phase motors

To comply with these new EcoDesign requirements, Lafert is to launch a new, full-compliant, range of 3-phase IE2 motors. It will cover 0.12 to 0.55kW machines and include brake versions. The range will be available well in advance of the scheduled introduction of the first step in this new EU MEPS requirement.

To satisfy those customers strongly focused on energy saving, Lafert will offer the same range of motors from 0.12 to 0.55kW as IE3 efficiency units. Their introduction anticipates future enhanced motor efficiency requirements whilst giving a competitive advantage to the EU market and its customers.

In addition, for customers thinking even further ahead regarding planned MEPS efficiency requirements, Lafert can offer you a solution. This is because their existing portfolio includes a range of permanent magnet motors offering IE4 and IE5 efficiencies!
