Low cost radar sensors feature simple hygienic fitting adapters for food and beverage applications

18 September 2020

Radar level sensors are now the same price or even lower in some cases than ultrasonic level sensors for process level measurement of liquids and solids. Unaffected by pressure, vapours, temperature or density change and highly resilient to build up on the sensor face, they can be used for process, storage, chemicals and waste measurements.

They are highly accurate and can measure over ranges of a few cm to tens of metres, and even look through plastic containers to measure levels inside. They have wireless communication for set up and management via Bluetooth app, highly convenient for inaccessible machinery, wet areas, workplace distancing, or high level vessels.

In some applications, its desirable to install radar level sensors with easily exchangeable fitting-adapters typically used in food applications. The main focus here is on quick and convenient fitting, compatibility and  interchangeability – not adhering to the strictest high-level hygienic standards – of course depending on the customer process and products being measured.

In order to achieve this, along with the best possible cleanability, new special adapters have been  designed. The O-ring sealing is at the front of the sensor, so that the product cannot penetrate into the threaded parts.

This means the new VEGAPULS compact 80 GHz radar sensors can also be used for ‘simple’ food applications, where no strict hygienic requirements are set, but the user is looking for quick and simple connection to existing process fittings. The adapter still uses FDA approved materials: stainless steel with an EPDM seal, so a conformance to according EG1935/2004 is available. For applications with very strict, high-level hygienic and cleaning requirements (e.g. Aseptic/SIP), these simple fitting adapters and the sensors (with a temperature limit of 80 °C) are not recommended. For these cases VEGA offer a VEGAPULS 64 level radar, typically with a PTFE sensor face, temperature capability up to 200°C, dedicated process connections and full hygienic/pharmaceutical approvals.
