Taking an integrated approach to product safety

Food safety is one of the most important aspects in food production. Other important considerations include a need for greater cost efficiencies and making best use of available space on the production floor. It is here that integrated systems can offer benefits. 

At the end-of-line, for example, integrated checkweighing/metal detection and checkweighing/x-ray systems can offer space savings while still ensuring product safety.

The Sparc range of integrated solutions from Interfood, for example, also offers vision inspection capabilities and print verification for labels. The Sparc range provides the capability to accommodate all QA testing via a single system and through a single touchscreen. The combination checkweighers include x-ray and metal detection and inspection technologies to ensure correct packing of all products produced.

The system features Sparc Atlas, a database through which the programmes are entered into the production line, including date coders, to offer a fail-safe system which reduces risk. 

SparcEye ensures that each label is automatically inspected via top and bottom cameras, checking that all labels are present and are correctly positioned and that the information they contain, including the individual date code characters, is accurate and legible. 

Any products for which faults are identified are automatically guided into a dedicated lockable rejection bin, keeping the production line moving while safeguarding against product recalls.

The database also features live data collection software, providing information about times and reasons for any line downtime, continuously calculating line OEE to generate immediate line monitoring and performance control, along with secure storage of all QA and production reports for audit and traceability.
