Kids learn food origin essentials with Silvery Tweed Cereals

Cereal and bakery ingredients processor Silvery Tweed Cereals has helped educate hundreds of school children from the north east of England about the origins of food at a pioneering ‘children’s countryside day’.

The Berwick-upon-Tweed based company, which supplies many of the UK’s household names in the breakfast cereal and bread and bakery sectors, sponsored and took part in the event in Northumberland organised by the Glendale Agricultural Society (GAS).

Now in its 11th year, the Children’s Countryside Day attracts around 1500 primary school children from across Northumberland and North Tyneside. Its aim is to help them learn more about where their food comes from, give them first-hand experience of rural life and an insight into the importance of farming and the countryside.

As well as supporting the event financially, Silvery Tweed Cereals ran an interactive stand on the day, giving children the chance to create their own blend of cereals and learn about different kinds of grain. 

Bob Gladstone, Silvery Tweed MD, said: “It was a pleasure to support the Glendale Agricultural Society’s Children’s Countryside Day once again this year. It’s so important that youngsters understand what goes into their food and where these ingredients come from, and the hands-on event GAS delivers every year is a great way of doing this.”

Silvery Tweed Cereals is one of the longest established family businesses in the food manufacturing industry. Today the company processes raw grains at its 40,000 sq ft factory – most of which come from a 40-mile radius in the Scottish Borders – into cereal ingredients, as well as cleaning and blending seeds, for supply into cereal and bakery products.
