Hygiene solutions

1) UV Technology
Supplier – UV Technology Limited
Client – Yorkshire Fresh Fruit (YFF) – A Division of Bakkavor Group
Solution – UV-C Berry Decontamination Tunnel
Category – Hygiene Solutions - and / or - Technological Development

YFF sought an innovative technology to decontaminate Berry Fruit prior to packaging in ‘ready to eat’ Fruit Salads. UV Technology Limited designed, supplied and installed a UV-C decontamination tunnel, optimised to destroy micro-organisms on a range of Berry fruit including Strawberries, Blueberries and Raspberries.

Challenge

  • To provide a ‘dry’ decontamination process to remove micro-organisms
  • Remove requirement to wash berries using costly chemicals and water
  • Extend Product shelf Life
  • Reduce product returns and associated customer complaints
Achievements
  • Complete removal of all wash water and associated chemical cleaning agents
  • Enhanced product quality and extended shelf life
  • Significantly reduced product returns and customer complaints
  • Enhanced log kill using UV-C than was previously achieved using a chlorinated berry wash
2) Air Products
Product: Freshline Plus cylinder
The Freshline® Plus cylinder is a unique modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) gas offering which has been developed by Air Products to answer the increasing need for more rigorous hygiene standards in the food packaging environment. The Freshline® Plus cylinder has the following features to prevent bacterial contamination in MAP and exceeds all EU food safety legislation requirements :
  • Unique integrated antibacterial 0.2 micron filter which ensures no microorganisms or dirt particles larger than 0.2 microns can pass from the high purity gas into packaged food
  • Exclusive BioCote® antimicrobial cylinder coating technology to provide continuous built-in protection for the expected lifetime of the product against growth of microbes, bacteria and mould on the cylinder’s surface
  • Improved anti-corrosive cylinder coating and residual pressure valve to prevent contamination being introduced into the cylinder from the external environment
3) Signatrol
SPYDAQ - AFFORDABLE RELIABLE ALARMED DATA LOGGING
Spydaq from Signatrol is an affordable, wireless temperature and humidity monitoring system designed specifically for the food processing industry. Spydaq allows users to deploy sensors in various locations from fridges, walk in chillers to production areas and warehousing, without the restrictions and cost of hard wiring. Results are monitored from a PC to ensure a paperless data logging chain.

The BaseStation, which manages the transmitters, also checks locally for alarm conditions via its inbuilt audio and visual alarms. Alarming locally is a requirement of the BRC Standard and means that any potential trouble spots can be identified quickly and corrective action taken, often saving vulnerable goods from damage or rapid decay.

4) Industrial Washing Machine
ET75 bin washer
Featuring automatic bin size selection and ultra efficient travelling wash jets, the innovative new ET75 bin washer delivers significantly enhanced productivity and cleaning performance compared with conventional bin washers.

The new machine is designed to handle up to 75 bins per hour for use with 200 kg and 400 kg Eurobins, and is ideally suited for use in large meat and food processing plants.
The travelling wash jets continuously traverse back and forth while the bin is held stationary, which means that each bin is subjected to multiple jetting cycles. This provides far superior cleaning compared with the conventional arrangement where the bin moves continuously past fixed wash jets and, therefore, receives only a single a single jetting cycle.

As a result, the ET75 cleans bins reliably and dependably, eliminating the need for them to be washed for a second time because the first wash has not completely removed the soiling.

5) Alchemy
The SISTEM training system delivers food hygiene and safety training to production people. As you will see in the release, SISTEM can train from 1 to 150 people using hand held devices. It is also ‘endorsed’ by the BRC as the way in which the system operates means that training in food hygiene is more efficient and so can assist companies in getting through the training part of the BRC audit.

Alchemy have also recently undertaken a survey with the BRC on food safety and hygiene.
