Welsh plant supplied horsemeat beefburgers to fast food chains

21 February 2013

The Food Standards Agency has announced that a Welsh plant has supplied fast food beefburgers that contained traces of horse DNA.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the company supplied contaminated burgers to a number of UK fast food chains. These have now been withdrawn.

Powys based Burger Manufacturing Company says the beefburgers – which also contained traces of lamb – came from a consignment supplied by Farmbox Meats in Aberystwyth. Farmbox was raided by the FSA earlier this month and the company’s owner, Dafydd Raw-Rees, was arrested.

The burgers are now being tested for phenylbutazone, a vetinary drug often found in horse, but which is banned from the food chain.

John Sparks, chief executive of Sparks Burger Supplies which owns the Burger Manufacturing Company, said: "We bought the meat from Farmbox, it was labelled as beef. I am 77 and it would never have occurred to me to anything in beefburgers other than beef."
