FSA expands horsemeat testing programme

The Food Standards Agency has announced it is to step up its testing programme, by examining stewing steak and ready meals that contain ‘beef’ that has not been minced.

The FSA has ordered 28 local authorities to test 224 lines of burgers, ready meals and other minced ‘beef’ products for horse and pork. This has now been expanded to include another 140 products including sandwiches sold by cafes, while a new EU testing programme will examine a further 150 products including gelatine and stock cubes.

The agency explained that the additional tests will mean that more food going into schools and hospitals will be checked.

Shadow Environment Secretary, Mary Creagh, (pictured) welcomed the FSA’s announcement. “However, people will be concerned to see that cubed steak, kebabs, stock cubes and gelatine are to be tested, meaning the horse meat scandal could go even wider than previously thought,” she said. “These new tests need to be done quickly - people want answers now.”
