Food sector secures government funding for skills

The Food & Drink Federation (FDF) says it's delighted the government has invested £1.7million in the food and drink manufacturing industry
Angela Coleshill, FDF’s Director of Competitiveness said: “The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is delighted that the Government has invested £1.7milllion in the food and drink manufacturing industry to boost the skills of its workforce and create new jobs which will enhance the competitiveness of the sector.
“With over a third of the workforce due to retire in the next 5 years and the current shortage of technicians and engineers, attracting talent and upskilling our existing workforce will be vital to ensure we have the technicians, managers and leaders of the future.
“FDF is leading the way in showcasing the food industry as a career destination of choice and in collaboration with industry partners such as the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink, we are undertaking a number of initiatives to improve the image of the sector and increase the number of opportunities available to young people.
“We are working with food and drink manufacturers to double the number of high quality apprenticeships within the sector to help us build a pool of talented apprentices that can be developed and deployed across the industry; our careers campaign ‘Taste Success - A Future in Food’ will dispel the myth that the food and drink manufacturing sector is outdated by showing young people that we are leading the way in regards to scientific and technological innovation, research and development; and FDF’s Graduate Ambition will see us working with universities to develop a new degree course to equip graduates with the skills that the food and drink industry requires.”
