Mini plant aids giant steps in food technology

A new mini UHT processing unit, designed and engineered by Tetra Pak CPS, is helping a premier food and drink technology centres carry out essential commercial product trials for a range of food and beverage businesses

Tetra Pak CPS supplies food processing equipment, specialising in bespoke systems and has been closely involved in refurbishing the food processing halls at Reaseheath College in Cheshire. The college is already established as one of the leading training institutions in the dairy processing sector and the halls form part of the developing Food and Drink Centre of Excellence.

The new mini UHT plant has been built to a unique design in order to meet the demanding specification set by the college. It replaces an aging unit and will enable researchers at Reaseheath to undertake product trials more easily and to the highest standards. It will also be an important teaching aid for students when they return for the new academic year.

Constructed within a mobile skid unit, the mini UHT plant incorporates a series of tubular heat exchangers, an aseptic homogeniser and holding tubes, plus control and data recording systems. Rated at 60 litres per hour the unit can process a wide variety of products including beverages, yoghurts and other milk products in batches as small as 10 litres.

Derek Allen, Food Commercial Manager at Reaseheath said: “Trialing small batches in a commercial scale plant is often disruptive, difficult and expensive. We have the expertise and experience to carry out this essential work and frequently assist both large and small businesses with many aspects of their product development.

“The new mini UHT unit is flexible, comparatively simple to operate and will provide the highest degree of accuracy for crucial test projects. It will also help students develop their knowledge and skills across a wide range of products.”

Tony Casey, Sales Manager at Tetra Pak CPS said: “Working with Reaseheath to understand their specific needs has allowed us to deliver a simple to use process that not only works well but looks the part.”
