SteriTouch launches combined masterbatch for food production

29 July 2011

SteriTouch has launched the first combined antimicrobial and metal detectable masterbatch, reinforcing its position as an innovator in the additives industry

SteriTect has been developed primarily for use in food production facilities, where foreign objects entering the production line can cause serious problems for both the manufacturer and the subsequent supply chain, with processing grinding to a halt. Undetected, this can lead to expensive recalls and unease amongst suppliers and consumers.

Incorporating SteriTect masterbatch into modular conveyor belts and other consumables used in production environments will provide continuous protection against mould and harmful bacteria such as E.Coli and Salmonella.

Based on ionic silver and adopted in many other industries, SteriTouch offers an extensive range of antimicrobial additives which are food contact approved and require no changes to existing manufacturing processes.

Furthermore, the combined additive is also metal detectable; of paramount importance in a food production environment. Equipment moulded with SteriTect masterbatch can be identified by modern detection equipment should it enter the production line by accident. The size of material in which the combined additive can be detected is limited only by the detector itself.

For the first time ever both of these benefits can be delivered as a single masterbatch.

SteriTouch has developed SteriTect in partnership with American metal detectable specialist, CM Products. Rapidly becoming the worldwide benchmark for food processing and metal detectable alternative materials, its MAGNETHANE range includes UHMWPE, Acetal and impact-modified nylon in the form of stock shapes and polymer compounds.

As part of its ongoing commitment to conduct research and development in-house, SteriTouch has processed the combined masterbatch using its recently purchased extruder, where the optimum addition rate of both metal detectable material and ionic silver has been trialled and tested. The extrusion line allows SteriTouch to run trials of custom masterbatch in-house and mould test swatches – reducing costs and turnaround time for customers.

With recent customers including Rust-Oleum with its Anti-Germ Paint for B&Q and powder coated medical trolleys for leading storage manufacturer Gratnells, SteriTouch has a growing customer base of household brands, including Mothercare, Crown Trade and Universal Electronics.
