Belfield’s 'nice deal for goat’s milk ice cream'

Belfield has signed exclusive rights with award-winning Northern Ireland ice cream specialist Mullins to distribute Bally Bleat goat’s milk ice cream to British retailers

The range was developed in response to demand for an alternative to cow’s milk ice cream due to a growing number of lactose intolerant consumers, especially children. Goat’s milk contains much less of the lactose sugar than dairy products and is therefore easier to digest, making it a viable alternative for some people.

Bally Bleat is the first goat’s milk ice cream to target the mainstream market, following Mullin’s agreement to supply selected stores of a national supermarket chain. The partnership with Belfield enables the manufacturer to reach the whole UK market with access to Belfield’s extensive customer base and distribution network.

The deal also enables Belfield to launch its first goat’s milk ice cream products – vanilla and blueberry swirl – to its wholesale customers, thereby expanding its ice cream and lolly range.

Ian King, managing director of Belfield, said: “We’re delighted to have partnered with Mullins to bring this exciting new product to British retailers - it’s a great addition to our range. We recognised a gap in the market for a goat’s milk ice cream and were keen to partner with a supplier that could meet the demands of our customers.

“Mullins is a well respected favourite in the Irish ice cream market and its goat’s milk product range is second to none. We’re confident the product will prove popular with our existing customers and anticipate new enquiries from retailers keen to offer their customers an alternative to cow’s milk.”

Established in 1954 selling home made ice cream from a small shop in Kilrea, Co. Londonderry, Mullins remains a family run firm. The company developed a range of cow’s milk products made from its own Jersey herd and has grown to include 50 “scoop parlours” and concessions in supermarkets across Northern Ireland.

Colm Mullins from Mullins, said: “We’re delighted to have joined forces with Belfield to supply Bally Bleat to the British market. We know from our experience in Ireland that there is a huge demand for a dairy alternative, and we’ve had many customers who say they’ve converted on taste alone!

“This is a very competitive market and no matter how good the product, it is essential for a relatively small manufacturer like Mullins to partner with a large, established supplier such as Belfield to get the chance to work with some of the country’s biggest retailers and wholesalers.”
