Head-to-toe protection for food industry

14 January 2011

Arco, a UK-based safety expert, says it can provide a one-stop shop solution for the food and drink industry’s safety needs.

The food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK and managing safe food handling and hygiene is paramount for companies operating within this sector. As well as protecting the products and the processes involved in food manufacture, employees need to be adequately protected too. The consequences for those businesses that do not provide proper protection for their employees can be costly.

Arco, the UK’s leading safety expert, can provide a one stop shop solution for the food and drink industry’s safety needs. As well as offering an extensive range of over 22,000 quality-assured safety products including specific products that meet with food industry standards, Arco is able to offer expert advice on safety in the workplace and how to comply with the latest legislation.

Understanding the difficulties that decision makers in the food industry face when choosing the correct protective equipment, Arco has put together a head to toe essential range for protecting the people, products and processes involved.

Head
Top of the list for head protection is Centurion’s NEW pioneering AirPro Baseball Bump Cap. A cap that keeps wearers clean, cool and ticks all the right boxes for operatives working within the food sector. Whether in the cold store, on the factory line or general food handling, this cap is an essential piece of workwear.

By incorporating the innovatively designed shell and crown pad with premium breathable fabric, the cap also provides maximum air flow allowing greater comfort for the wearer. All the component parts can be separated and individually rinsed and wiped; all adding to the hygienic benefits. The removable cover can be washed at 40°c and the fabric is wipeable too.

The cap is certified to EN 812 (Bump cap standard) and incorporating Amendment No 1, it also features a reflective element, enhancing safety and visibility. The lower nape strap design ensures that the elastic strap sits neatly into the nape of the neck giving greater head retention and security and hair is then kept away from the face and most importantly away from food products being handled. Available in various colours and with hi-vis strips, the cap can be personalised with a choice of corporate branding providing the workforce with a uniform and professional image.

Hands
Hands are one of the most important tools we possess and their protection for those working on production lines is crucial. To ensure that workers have access to the best hand protection technologies, Arco has teamed up with glove manufacturer Marigold Industrial to offer advanced and absolutely essential hand and arm protection for the food industry.

Marigold’s extensive glove range offers high performance hand protection for a variety of practices at great value prices. Designed to offer specific protection for 6 different food applications: food preparation, cold protection, cut protection, disposable, general handling and food hygiene and cleaning, as well as being available in a variety of sizes; the range ensures a comfortable and safe fit to suit each individual’s requirements.

The range is compliant with the parent food handling directive EC/1935/2004. As wearing natural rubber gloves and working in a food environment can develop skin irritations, Marigold Industrial also provides a selection of low protein latex gloves approved for food use.

In addition to the hand protection products, Arco and Marigold have developed an essential selection guide for the food industry to make it easy for operatives to ensure they are wearing the correct PPE for the right job whilst at the same time being compliant with the latest legislative requirements.

The law stipulates that employers must assess and identify the hazards in a workplace and take the appropriate actions to safeguard against any accidents. For hands and arms, the right glove and sleeve for the job must be selected. The guide lists the products available for the wide range of food applications and colour codes them so that users can easily identify which glove to adopt.

Brooms and Brushes with Salmon Hygiene Resin-Set Technology
Arco is also able to provide the latest in hygiene technologies to the food sector and areas with high safety requirements through its brand new collection of Resin-Set, colour coded cleaning brooms and brushes. Ergonomically designed with Salmon Hygiene Technology, Arco has developed a highly sophisticated brush filament that offers the very best in hygiene and food safety.

The brushes are structured so that the tuft is stapled into the back of the brush with food grade stainless steel staples. An epoxy resin has been floated in to permeate the bottom of the tuft hole which cleverly seals and secures the staples, filaments and face of the brush thus preventing the accumilation of dirt, moisture and bacteria in the tuft holes. As well as being durable and easy to clean, all of the products can be autoclaved at 134˚C.

With 10 unique designs, the collection offers a range of products to suit all areas of food hygiene including the Hygiene Resin-Set; Nail Brush, Soft Hand Brush, Scrub Brush and Flat Sweeping Broom. From manual food preparation to factory floor cleaning and 209mm to 609mm in width; there is an appropriate Salmon Hygiene Resin-Set model to assist in making a safe and clean environment in which to work.

Available in 5 colourways; red, yellow, green, blue and white, Arco offer users the opportunity to colour code their brushes for specific uses and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Crtitical Control Points) if required.

Toe
Last but definitely not least – footwear is an essential piece of protective clothing that is worn for the duration of the entire working day. Selecting the correct footwear for working environments within the food and drink industry is vital.

As well as being comfortable and durable, the appropriate footwear should protect the wearer as well as prevent contamination to the environment in which they are situated and should therefore meet the European slip resistant requirements. Arco offers a range of high quality slip resistant footwear suitable for the food sector from safety shoes and boots to safety wellingtons.

The Arco Safety Shoe is an excellent workwear product which, as well as being water-resistant, breathable and anti-static, has a single density polyurethane sole which resists oils, fats, lactic acid and grease. For increased protection in industrial operations, Arco offers a host of high quality other brand wellington boots including the SureGrip Slip-Resistant Safety Wellington and the Dunlop Purofort wellington range.

All of the products in the range are ergonomic and lightweight to offer optimum comfort and reduce the risks of joint fatigue. Advanced technologies ensure flexibility, durability, resistance to animal and vegetable oils and fats, solvents, disinfectants, chemicals and will insulate wearers in cold stores up to –20˚C. In addition to a size range of 6-12, different treads are available to provide exceptional grip on wet or oily surfaces. Whatever the requirements, Arco has the footwear that fits.
