New listeria scare rocks turkey industry

Only weeks after four deaths were linked to listeria bacteria on celery at a Texas food plant, another scandal is rocking the state. This time a firm is said to be recalling several kinds of fully cooked, ready-to-eat smoked turkey breast products that, Xinhuanet is reporting, may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

Xinhuanet reports the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s Food Safety and Inspection Service had said New Braunfels Smokehouse ordered the recall after a routine test found Listeria monocytogenes in the products.

The listeriosis bacteria can cause fever, muscle aches, diarrhea and vomiting, and lead to deaths among people with a weak immune system.

According to the report, the recalled products included:

-- The one-pound packages of "New Braunfels Smokehouse Sliced Smoked Turkey" with package code "2210" on the label;

-- The four- to six-pound packages of "New Braunfels Honey- Glazed Spiral Sliced Smokehouse Hickory Smoked Boneless Breast of Turkey" with package code "2180" on the label;

-- The four- to six-pound whole breast packages of "Stegall Boneless Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast" with package code "2210" on the label; and

-- The four- to six-pound whole breast packages of "Stegall Spiral Sliced Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast" with package codes "2180" or "2210" on the label.

On its website, New Baunfels Smoakehouse says it started in 1943 when Russell Kemble “Kim” Dunbar bought five ice plants in small towns across South Texas.
