Dosing pumps from seepex for accurate pulse free flow
04 June 2010
Food and beverage producers are increasingly using seepex dosing pumps to deliver product flow rates from 100 ml per hour up to 1000 L per hour

Accuracy of +/- 1% and pressures up to 24 bar are features of the dosing pump range which can handle products with viscosities up to 1,000,000 centipoise.
The smooth flow generated by the rotation of pumping elements of rotor and stator eliminates pulsation so the flow rate is proportional to the pump speed and not affected by viscosity. Because the cavity formed by rotor and stator is ‘progressed’ through the pump the action is low shear and the pumps are also self priming. The interference nature of the fit between the rotor and stator pumping elements prevents back flow so non return valves are not needed.
A large producer of alcoholic beverages has replaced diaphragm pumps, which were dosing colours and acidity regulators on 2 lines, with seepex hygienic dosing pumps. Productivity improvements have been delivered by accurate variable flow with reduced maintenance and simple calibration. The pumps have variable speed drives controlled by flow meters in discharge pipe-work ensuring that product quality and consistency is maintained despite variable raw materials.
The replacement has been completely successful with improved flow control giving consistent high quality product. The customer is so pleased with the results that they plan to replace more of their existing system with seepex dosing pumps.
A completely different industry sector also uses seepex hygienic dosing pumps to deposit an abrasive topping onto biscuit surfaces. The pumps are controlled to dose accurate but variable amounts depending upon recipe demands, and because they are pulse free can deposit directly onto a continuous product flow.
The versatility of the seepex range of dosing pump is such that a wide variety of products of differing characteristics can be accurately dosed.
Valuable ingredients, such as colours and flavours, can be added in small quantities with a high degree of accuracy,
chemically aggressive products such as Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Hypochlorite and acids can be dosed accurately in-line
viscous products with poor flow characteristics can be dosed by using an open hopper with an auger feed to the rotor and stator.
