Fruit and veg insiders needed to help develop new standards

04 December 2009

Employers working in the fresh produce sector are being called on to support the development of a new set of Occupational Standards being led by Improve, the food and drink sector skills council

The Standards will describe the specialist knowledge and skills needed to undertake particular job roles in the fresh produce sector, covering topics such as quality control, allergens, ripening, handling and grading.

Their development is being supported by the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) and Improve is asking fresh produce employers and stakeholders to work with them to help scope out the Standards, determining exactly what skills and knowledge they need to cover.

Improve’s development director, Derek Williams, said: “These new Standards will be essential in helping to address the skill needs of the fresh produce sector. But to make them useful and worthwhile, we need input from those involved in the industry.”

RI Training, a specialist research consultancy, is carrying out the initial consultation on behalf of Improve. Employers who would like to join the consultation should contact Patrick McDaniel at RI training on 01379 676545 or patrick@ritraining.co.uk

When the first draft is complete, the Standards will then be opened up to the wider industry via an online consultation on Improve’s website.
