Campden BRI: Water footprinting next hot issue
21 September 2009
Research organisation Campden BRI is alerting the food and drink industry to the emerging issue of water footprinting and Defra targets for reduced water consumption

Defra’s Food Industry Sustainability Strategy tasks the UK to reduce water consumption during food production by up to 25 per cent. In addition, the issue of water quantities used in food processing has hit the headlines of national newspapers in recent weeks, raising awareness amongst consumers.
Recognising that many food and drink manufacturers require guidance on this topic, Campden BRI is running a seminar to spotlight the concepts of embedded water and the water footprint. The aim is to educate the food and drink industry on how it will be affected by the increasing need to account for water use.
Speakers will include representatives from The Environment Agency, The World Wide Fund for Nature and The Food Ethics Council. Presentations will demonstrate useful practices and technologies for improving water efficiency.
“Water is a vitally important resource for the food and drink manufacturing industry,” says Dr. Andrew Green at Campden BRI. “It uses 10 per cent of the public water supply as an ingredient, for processing and to maintain hygiene. Water footprinting and standardised means for its assessment, are now gaining the prominence that carbon foot printing has received over the last couple of years. It is set to form an integral part of sustainability measures in the future, and food and drink manufacturers need to keep their finger firmly on the pulse of new developments.”
The seminar, to be held on 11 November, is geared towards technical directors, process and environmental managers and those with the objective of improving resource efficiency of their production processes. Sustainability is a core focus for Campden BRI. At Campden Day 2009, Jonathan Porritt presented the annual Campden Lecture, addressing Sustainability through Food Security. A podcast of the lecture is available for download at: http://www.campden.co.uk/podcasts.htm
