T Cards improves contractor tracking

14 August 2009

Since the introduction of T Cards Direct Contractor Board at the home of West Country pastry manufacturer, Ginsters, its maintenance managers have a clearer, more accurate picture of contractor movements in the plant

A big advantage is ease of use, which helps ensure that contractors comply with the log-in, log-out procedures, giving a clear at-a-glance snap-shot of who is on site.

Ginsters is a brand recognised for superb quality and taste throughout its range of pastries, sandwiches and pies. Success has seen the company increase significantly its production capacity, supplying over three million pastries every week to general food retail outlets, local supermarkets as well as national chains and motorway services from its newly enlarged bakery.

To maintain its reputation Ginsters ensure that all aspects of its food preparation, processing and packaging operate to optimum efficiency. This requires additional maintenance support from specialist machine contractors, electricians, etc, at any one time there could be up to 70 contractors on site.

It is crucial the in-house maintenance team has an accurate record of contractor movement. Unfortunately the twin-carbonated registration system previously used had its failings; one problem was contractors would not spend time to leaf through sheets of paper to sign themselves off-site.

Originally contractors would enter their details in the two-part register, one part they kept the other was held in the book ready to be completed on departure; this rarely took place leaving maintenance managers unsure who was left on site at the end of a shift.

A single column T Cards - Contractors Board – has overcome the many shortcomings of the original system. One benefit is even at shift change, the new Ginsters team can easily see what contactors are still on site, where they are working and for what reason simply by looking at the Contactor Board.

The T Card system has simplified the whole process, giving a much more accurate picture at any time of day. Every contractor arriving on site completes a specially prepared card before placing it in the board, the card carries the name of the person, the company represented, why they are on site and where they will be working.

This whole process has wide appeal; by using the card system it allows more than one contractor to register at any time, and when work is complete the contactor can easily identify his card, removing it from the rack and handing it to reception before leaving site.
