Stainless motors that can enhance hygiene and save money

28 January 2019

Lafert’s ‘Marlin Stainless’ AC motors are designed to meet the highest hygiene standards. They are ideal for applications throughout the food processing and packaging industries. Also, being corrosion resistant, they are ideal for many applications in aggressive industrial/chemical environments.

The hygienic characteristics and corrosion resistance of these 304 stainless steel motors – no paint to chip or flake - are enhanced by the motors’ smooth exteriors, having no cooling fins or nameplates (data is etched into motor body) to harbour germs and dirt.  Complementing these hygienic design features are an NTN Blue double lip seal and a GAMMA seal fitted on the shaft to guard against any risk of ingress to the motor.

In addition, Marlin motors are IP69/66K rated and have a proven design for CIP areas, which means they are hose-down tolerant, even when cleaning chemicals are used.  This means they can be cleaned in situ – so no dismantling and no fiddly crevices to clean.

All these benefits combine to give a rapid payback by simplifying clean down operations, avoiding motor failure and minimising downtime. One customer claims payback within one month whilst another achieved savings more than £4000.00 when using just two Marlin motors through just reduced maintenance costs.

The motors have a compact precision-lapped, face-contact mechanical shaft seal that is optimised to prevent water intrusion from high-pressure hoses and the effects of pooling liquid on vertically mounted motors - so ideal for Vertical Shaft and Up Applications

The magnetically aligning faces can tolerate greater misalignment and vibration than the standard sealing solutions, which results in extended bearing life.

Lafert’s Marlin Stainless 3-phase motors are all metric IEC machines.  This gives European OEMs and end users complete inter-changeability with existing motors, both as original build components and as retrofit items.

For internal protection against moisture, and provide compatibility with inverter control, the motor stator windings are double vacuum and pressure impregnated and phases are insulated.

To overcome the inherent condensation problem associated with electric motors exposed to internal and external temperature differences, the Marlin motors have four quadrant drain ports in each end shield that will accept ‘T’ drain plugs on removal of grub screws.  This ensures that there will always be a drain plug at the lowest point of the motor.

Compatible gearboxes can be supplied. The gearboxes, which have hollow shafts with life lubricated gears, are available with centre distances of 31, 42 and 61mm with ratios from 5:1 to 75:1. Torques range from 0.9Nm to 208Nm and options include gears with torque pins, food spec lubricants and various output shaft designs. Other adaptations can be offered upon request.

A full range mounting arrangements, including SEW special flange and shaft compatible designs, is available.

Polished Finishes can be to pharmaceutical standard 0.5RA.

Marlin motors are offered in power ratings from 0.18 to 15 kW in metric frame sizes up to 160 as TEFC machines.  Smaller units (up to 0.75 kW) are also available from 63 frame size as TENV machines. TEAOM versions are also available for installations where motors experience a continuous airstream flow.
