Supermarkets are reporting increased sales of spiralised vegetables as more people seek low-carb alternatives to pasta.
 
Tesco started selling carrot spaghetti in May last year, and in the last three weeks have seen a 51 per cent increase in sales. Similarly, sales of butternut squash and courgette spaghetti have both risen by 70 per cent, according to numbers reported by the Guardian. 

“This is the first January that ready-prepared spiralised vegetables have been available on UK high streets and, judging by the rocketing demand, many people have made them part of their new-year diet regimes to lower their carb intake,” said Tesco prepared-vegetable buyer Emma Bonny, in comments to the newspaper. 

Spiralisers have been on the market for some time and cost from as little as £9. They turn starchy vegetables into curly, spaghetti-like strips, 

They have become increasingly popular as people adopt low-carb diets that dissuade people from eating pasta and rice, which are both in carbohydrates. 

Waitrose told the Guardian that it had seen a 51 per cent increase in sales of spiralised veg. 

“2015 was the year of the spiraliser, which inspired the nation to include more vegetables in their diet,” Tom Cooper, vegetable buyer with Waitrose, was quoted as saying.

“This year looks set to be the year of ready-spiralised veg. Our customers have really embraced this trend.”
